Sol Solidari opposes the destruction of 40,000 hectares of rainforest in Cameroon to turn them into a palm oil plantation

The site chosen by the American company Herakles Farms is in the middle of four protected areas, the Korup National Park (one of the oldest parks of African lowland rainforest), Rump Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, Banyang MBO Wildlife Sanctuary and Mundemba Forest Management Area. This area is a main corridor for wildlife and is rich in biodiversity.

There are 44 villages (over 10,000 people) living in the area intended to be deforested and its inhabitants depend entirely on sustainable exploitation of natural resources of this forest for their livelihood.

Unfortunately, few individuals who are not natives of the area have corrupted some government officials to obtain a temporary permit (under the name of SGSOC and now Herakles Farms) to operate in this area for 99 years. These individuals were intimidating villagers, but found resistance, so they began to negotiate with the chiefs of different people and have managed to corrupt some chiefs at the expense of the poor villagers who have no knowledge of the environmental impact. The company has already destroyed hundreds of hectares of primary forest to prepare the tree nursery, in the hope that the Government approve the final permission for the felling of trees.

If this project goes ahead at least 40,000 hectares of undisturbed primary forest will be lost, but Herakles Farms is still negotiating additional 10,000 hectares, and have the potential to expand the project area to reach the limit of 100,000 hectares, as they have the necessary financial power to corrupt leaders and make them sign agreements.

The natural resources of all protected areas around the plantation will be under the pressure of thousands of workers who will come to work on this project. Many animal and plant species will disappear and rivers will dry up, leaving thousands without water. Finally, millions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) will be released into the atmosphere by the burning of thousands of trees during site preparation for planting.

Sol Solidari is working actively with the local KREO/KOGAN NGO. We want to stop the project by organizing a massive awareness campaign to all peoples of the area and the organization of a "green event" in Mundemba (main village of the area) to protest the project. We will held meetings with local people to make them aware of the environmental impact of the project and will ask them to participate in a demonstration in Mundemba, that can appear in national media. Finally, we will monitor the administrative process of the project to decide the next steps to take.

We are seeking funding to carry out these actions.
